Complete 2023 Start Gate mission using object detection

What needs to change?

One of the RoboSub 2023 missions included moving through a start gate successfully, even when started in any direction. Unfortunately, our solution to this task only included dead reckoning, which is a suboptimal solution for this problem.

This issue includes completing this mission using some form of object detection, whether that is sonar, vision, or another method. Therefore, this task may include the development of a sonar or vision algorithm. Note that some algorithms for this purpose may have already been developed for the RoboSub 2019 Start Gate mission.

How would this task be tested?

  1. Complete the mission in simulation, starting in different orientations.
  2. Complete the mission in real-life by starting the sub in different orientations and having the sub successfully complete its mission.
