mate-menu not displaying through remote X

I use the mate-menu for my users on a computer lab setup using LTSP. My thin clients do not show a menu on their mate-panel, but only a white pixel where the menu should be. I can see the menu running in the background, and when I kill it, I get the prompt that the applet crashed and would I like to reload as well as the pixel disappearing.

If I forward my X through ssh, it displays correctly.

I have compared the environment output and the only thing really different between the two is the DISPLAY variable. On the thin client without ssh forwarding, it is the normal $IP_ADDRESS_OF_SERVER:7.0 and it doesn't work, but on the same thin client with ssh x forwarding, the DISPLAY shows localhost:13.0.

I am willing to test and debug whatever in order to fix, as this is fairly important in our setup.
