Extremely slow to download, downloads terminated prematurely, had to download files manually from https://system-image.ubports.com/

I tried for several hours to install Ubuntu Touch on my oneplus one, and downloads were extremely slow and terminated prematurely. Unfortunately the installer doesn't say where it pulls the files from. By accident I finally found out, that they are on https://system-image.ubports.com/pool/ and I downloaded them manually with wget which finished quickly. So something seems to be wrong with the installer, tried 0.8.8, 0.8.9, both appimage and snap

Same issue with Nexus 7 (flo). The download is taking an extremely long time. I'm tempted to read the ABD docs and do this manually. The files do not look that big if I'm seeing the right thing. The download progress doesn't have units but it likely kB/s and it's around 0.02.
