deck oled: doesn't go to gaming mode on startup

Describe the bug

when i start my deck oled, it goes to a blinking line in the top left after exiting plymouth. inputs work and i can access the tty through ctrl+alt+F2

What did you expect to happen?

i expected it to enter gaming mode.

had to write out that status output by hand, can't guarantee there's no typos. only included first and last 4 characters of each digest sha256

before this happened occasionally on startup it's hang at a systemd fail message and i'd have to try it again but i'm not seeing that message anymore after running updates, just nothing. i don't remember what it was.
