ES6 module and Typescript bindings

Future development would become more manageable if this package were migrated to TypeScript. Additionally, migrating to ES6 modules increases compatibility with newer versions of node and web packages. Although ES6 migration would represent a breaking change, I believe it would be worth the effort.
