Update styles for cleaner look
The red is a bit harsh and cleaner typography could help. Also, considering trying to add styling to the "ad-detector" badge (so that it's more official) and "X" button is more of a button and intuitive to the user.
[Full disclosure: I'm an Art Director for The Atlantic and we think about these things a lot from a readers perspective. I love this idea and would like to help develop a standard that balances user experience with full transparency]
Thanks for this. It definitely looks better, but I'm nervous about toning down the harshness of the red. Do you think it's possible that users could ignore a toned-down banner at the top of the page (a bit like ad blindness)?
I wonder if we could make it feel even more integrated with the web browser itself, so it's more of a notification. I don't think it will be easily ignored because it's fixed to the top of the viewport at all times (unless you close it). There is definitely a balance between transparency and a message that visually says "warning: stay away from this".
Ultimately, I'm envisioning this plugin being adopted as a standard by all web browser makers. It's something that could benefit everyone and force the buzzfeeds of the world to not mislead people.
Perhaps a more browsery look would help, for example if the style were similar to Chrome notification banners? This may antagonize publishers less while avoiding the blindness issue.
Unfortunately there are ads/bad sites that mimic this pattern. I want to be careful to not fall in that category.
