Codemirror caret not following and aligning with current line

When writing in a code block the caret does not move down to new lines but lags behind (above) the current place of entry. Each move to a new line increases the distance behind the current line and the caret. It does follow the horizontal entry point but cannot align vertically.

in the screenshot the red line is where the caret displays and the green line is the point where i am actually entering text. Thanks!
