Breeding time calculation

Supposedly breeding takes a constant 5 minutes, but can be extended if the pals aren't actually at the ranch.

• Is there a way to verify that this is true?
• If it isn't true, what's the appropriate calculation?
• Regardless of whether breeding time is constant, is there a good way to estimate time lost due to pals not being at the ranch?
