The Twitter algorithm is beyond flawed (replies, politics)
Describe the bug When showing the replies to a tweet, the Twitter algorithm consistently elevates junk and in many cases suppresses quality content. Please note that the only way I use Twitter is concerning USA politics, so those who use it for other uses might have a different take.
To Reproduce For tangible examples, first create a test Twitter account by clearing your cookies and preferably using a new IP. Then, look at the replies to various political leaders. Twitter will elevate junky tweets like childish GIFs or sockpuppets while suppressing more in-depth criticisms. In some cases, all or most replies will be suppressed (by hiding them behind the 'show more replies' link; those are what are called "LowQuality" in the source). Examples of that are https://twitter.com/rickcarusola/status/1619110480093798400 and https://twitter.com/millanpatterson/status/1620976389154549760.
For countless more examples, see these reports. Those are produced by the More Speech tool available from my profile (it currently requires a custom build of Selenium due to timeout issues, but I can provide info to run it on request).
And, no, Musk didn't change much. When I checked in 2019, Vijaya/Roth were censoring about half the replies to the president of Iran. As of Feb 2023, Musk was censoring about half the replies to the head ayatollah of Iran. In fact, Musk is censoring millions of people each day and in many cases that makes absolutely no sense.
Twitter would save a lot of time, money, and energy if they just weeded out obvious commercial spam (not opinion that's called "spam" in order to censor it) and then just showed the replies in random order each time. Or, they could use my ranking formula which took me about an hour to come up with and is objectively better than what Twitter must have spent years on.

Totally agree. I still get too many DMs from Chinese girls.

Thanks, but I've been on the internet for a long time. Since he doesn't have what it takes to explain what he disagrees with, how about you?
I've since posted specific recent examples showing how the Twitter ranking algorithm is beyond flawed.
[EDIT: I corrected the link, sorry about that]

Just ignore them it's obvious they are not interested in an open-ended discussion.
