I'm opening this PR to document my progress. What are the style guidelines for contributing? I'd like to get code formatting out of the way early, so that I don't have to reformat everything at the end.

Feel free to choose any style, as long as it consistent I dont think it matters.

I do not have time to continue this at present. If you would like to merge what is here, I can rebase on master, otherwise we can close this PR.
