feature request: inherit reply visibility from replied post

Open Unip0rn opened this issue 2 years ago • 5 comments

To avoid posting publicly to a follower-only thread it would be helpful to have the option to make the reply's default visibility the same as the post that it replies to instead of the current default of making everything the same default.

The longer explanation is offered by the following post-flow:

  1. see a post
  2. decide to reply
  3. the user's default visibility is followers only because the user prefers to decide consciously when the user posts more publicly and also to reduce the visibility of posts that are strongly impulse motivated 3.1 therefor in replys the user habitually presses to make it unlisted as most posts the user replys to are public or unlisted posts
  4. meh.

yea this is me. the mainline web interface has the same problem. i really wish there was an option to inherit visibility in addition to the default visibility setting. thank you for considering.

Tusky does inherit visibility from the post you reply to, but it chooses the most private of:

  • the visibility of the post to which you're replying
  • your default post visibility setting

…precisely so that you won't inadvertently make a post that's less private than you meant to.

@Tak I suspected as much which is why I included the post-flow which shows in 3. why this may be desired to change - there is no indication as to how public the replied to post is, fixing which would be my disprefered option, just improving the visibility of that from the compose context - would that be something you'd rather consider?

Yea this had the opposite effect on me, forming a habit where i would switch to unlisted for replies. Hmm. I have since toggled the default to public, not sure where to take this discussion from here, sorry. It might serve as an indicator that there is room for improvement here.

Between the newish "default reply visibility" setting and the existing "don't default to a visibility less private than the original post's visibility" behavior, is there anything else to do on this one?
