Can't add new instance

Open tinywombat765 opened this issue 2 years ago • 10 comments

When trying to log in to a new instance, I type the domain in, click "log in with mastodon", then I get a brief flash with the android logo upside down in the top left of the screen, then it says "Could not load the login page". This happens on no matter the instance I try to log in to.

  • Tusky Version: 20.0

  • Android Version: CalyxOS 4.5.0 (Android 13)

  • Android Device: Pixel 5

  • Mastodon instance (if applicable): N/A

  • [x] I searched or browsed the repo’s other issues to ensure this is not a duplicate.

I see that WebView flashes for a second and fails to load the page. I see that you have specific ROM, is your WebView up-to-date?

is your WebView up-to-date?

I don't know, how would I check this? I haven't had issues with any other apps.

@charlag can confirm this problem on PixelOS 2022 11. Sadly no newer update is available yet.

Your suspicion about Android System WebView could be correct. Seeing Android System WebView update in Aurora. Played with this by removing WebView and re-adding it via PlayStore. This resulted in the update no longer showing. Also PlayStore showed no update and 110.0.5481.65 installed. And yet, when trying to add an account to tusky that always results in Could not load the login page. error.

Since I was able to add the same accounts in Mastondon and Fedilab apps, this is not a general problem but Tusky related.

Can you try if the new "Login with browser" (in the three-dot-menu) works please?

Ah ha! That work around does work. I'll leave the issue open though until as it isn't fixed.

When tapping … > Login with Browser nothing happens. Using Firefox as default browser. Edit: The procedure is to first enter the instance and then … > Login with Browser and I confirm that works as expected.

Thanks for pointing at this workaround. Apparently it isn't very discoverable since both users in this issue bothered to file / comment on the issue.

Just want to join in and say that I have the same issue. Tho for me, the login and 2fa screen after that show, only for the instance being shown as if I was using the browser, before finally kicking me back to the instance screen with the error shown in the video. Second attempt didn't even do the last part, meaning I was on the web version of the instance.

The instance uses the glitch-soc fork of Mastodon 4.2

Logging in with browser option works. Perhaps the issue is with Mastodon 4.2? It was a larger update after all and perhaps the login screen was altered/affected by it?

@Andre601 the issue you are describing sounds a lot like https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18481, but that should be fixed in Mastodon 4.2 🤔

Not sure. the linked bug seems like this...

Tho, I have to make a correction. The instance in question uses 4.3.0-alpha.0 of the glitch-soc fork apparently... maybe an unintentional regression bug or smth?

I have the same problem and the instance is using 4.2.1. But I cannot login via browser either. I tried with Firefox Focus and Chromium on CalyxOS. Is there something that I can do to find the source of the problem?
