Alternative Characters for Placeholder

Currently the placeholder is marked by the character #. This is usually an invalid character in math mode and causes the preview of display math equations to be temporarily shown as an error before finishing filling the placeholders. So I wonder if another character could be chosen for the placeholders so that the preview could be displayed normally while working with placeholders, making the user experience a little bit smoother.
