Even easier: retro-game style character rotation.

In other words, use one button to rotate through ASCII character in one direction, another one to rotate in the other direction. A third button to proceed to next character (move cursor forward). A fourth button to send (return).

The rotation could be done by simply binding "backspace, then enter the next higher/lower ASCII character" to two buttons. You get the idea. Remember putting your nickname in the high score table of arcade games.
