Can't compile on CentOS 8 Stream

Running configure ends with:

openssl-devel is installed.

EL8 (and EL9) appear to restrict older OpenSSL (< 1.1.0) calls.

See #161 for a possible, but untested workaround.

Can you try checking out the "develop" branch and seeing if that builds more cleanly? If not, please post logs?
