Suggestion to release a v3-version with limited functionality

Joachim,

Pimd-V3 and my concept pfSense package seems to run perfect, when using local multicast scenarios. That in opposite to Pimd-V2 which is not working on FreeBSD12.x at all! (actual pfSense test version is now based on 12.2-Prerelease). Problem is that there is no way to make a formal Pimd-pfSense package as long as there is no formal Pimd-release ☹

Since Pimd-V2 you did an enormous number of improvements, despite that there are still many “ToDo” in the code. Those “ToDo’s” does not take away that v3 is already a huge(!) improvement to v2 ! and it is more than a pity not to use all that work!

So I hope it is an option to release a v3-version which restrictions, .e.g. only suited as a local standalone daemon. To release a full featured version as 3.x or 4.x later on.

The official release of pimd v3 will be done when it is ready and I have the time to invest in the release work. The TODOs in the code are not what determines when that is, there are other factors, for instance it needs to be tested on all its intended targets and I need to sync the wire format of pimctl with the pimd-dense project.

Since I'm the only one maintaining the project, I'm the one who will end up with all the (unpaid) support, so I make the call.

Joachim, as you know I am an enthusiastic PIMD user. At this moment running a myself compiled version of the beta on pfSense / FreeBDS12.3 without any issues.

Problem is that it is pity that not more users can enjoy PIMD as long as there is no released version :(

I noticed that you are working on that. And I know and understand completely, that you only want to a release solid software, but the software version I am using now (Q3 2021), is at least for me, already working great .....

Work is progressing, slowly. I have some help though from the amazing people at Stormshield who are using pimd and FreeBSD.
