Whereas I understand the intent here, I'm not sure this is something that should ever be added. The majority of users are not going to have huge lists of equipment...

I understand the desire, and the use case. I myself have about the same number of things in my inventory. And having inventory that could be tied to a 'site'...
Actually the location affinity may make it easier to implement.
