Can't use zeroconf .local name to connect to server

Ubuntu 20.04 Transgui 5.18.0 Transmission 3.0.0

From this Ubuntu host, talking to another Ubuntu host, I can ping server.local and curl server.local just fine, but the transmission gui doesn't use .local zeroconf names to look up the server to connect to and reports "not found".

It works from macOS transmission-remote-gui to transmission 3.0 running on a qnap.
