imshow() on 8-bit gray tif

while using imshow() with the example pics, it works fine for 16-bit depth tif. but it can't adjust my 8-bit depth tif even with the toolbar marked with 8-bit render.

So is there any tips for the 8-bit depth pic or I should convert my tif to 16-bit mode?
