I'd love for this to happen too. Even if it's just support for the footnote syntax.

I have no desire to implement/maintain every conceivable markdown extension out there, or even just the ones with 6 word bodyless issue requests for them. I'm quite willing to consider things on a feature-by-feature basis, though, particularly for simple or widely adapted features.

Footnotes look pretty simple. You could probably just highlight them the same way as the link style they mimic. @tgray, want to take a crack at them?

This would be great to have.

As @tgray I'd be already very happy with just the footnote and abbrevation support.
