Feature request: option to exclude terminal gaps with maxdiffs when searching

A user requested an option to exclude terminal gaps with maxdiffs when searching. The terminal gaps are currently included in the count used with maxdiffs. So an option to ignore these or a new alternative maxdiffs option that excludes them would be useful.
