Offer _SUFFIX as a filename modification alternative to PREFIX_

Open aazbelfast opened this issue 4 years ago • 2 comments

PDFsam_ is a prefix used to identify generated pages. MS Windows, for example, has moved away from prefixes preferring suffixes instead. This would be more useful to me. Again with the text being configurable (allowing spaces)

So instead of: PDFsam_Filename.PDF -or- MyPrefix_Filename.PDF Filename_PDFsam.PDF -or- Filename_MySuffix.PDF -or- Filename My Suffix.PDF

@aazbelfast that's why i suggested at #347 to not use pre- or suffixes at all! - simply use a "real" name field with variables aka. keywords to define the whole name there... so you don't even have to use the filename aka. basename at all, if you don't want to - as in my case. (and simply add numbers like most file explorer do, if there would be collisions because of the same name.) this would make PDFsam even more flexible and powerful!

but if PDFsam sticks with pre-/suffixes (but why should it in the longrun?), i also think that the filename aka. basename should be in front, to easily have all cohesive files next to each other in a file explorer if sorting alphabetical.

@DJCrashdummy Thanks for the reply on this. Sorry for not having seen it sooner (didn't see any email notification). The numbering system you describe wouldn't be the best option for me as it's meaningless (to me) as I often inherit filename which end in numbers. Since all my files are named by someone else, no imposed generic naming could work for me (the whole point, for me, is to be able to control it). So I would definitely prefer to write a custom suffix on the tab (or choose to leave it blank, perhaps). I can imagine that being able to add a pre- and suffix in the same pass could also be useful so I wouldn't discount that as an option. I would hope for flexibility perhaps using custom fields with a default behaviour if the custom fields are left blank.

Then again, I'm no developer and as much as I love this software, I'm in the hands of the resident geniuses!!

Any hope for development in this area? Thanks

Can you clarify what is the desired name you want to achieve? Using the placeholders should be quite flexible so something line [BASENAME]_Suffix should generate what you are expecting, if I understood correctly your use case.

Sounds perfect! In my mind, I see a suffix option working just as the prefix does now. Just putting this text at the end instead of at the front so that the files can maintain their place when listed in Windows Explorer.

Scenario: Imagine 100 PDF files (invoices) named by different people for their own reasons (meaning unreliable consistency). Now imagine that usually there is one invoice per PDF but that a few may contain multiple invoices which need to be 'split' by page number. Adding a number to the end instead of the front of the filename makes more sense to me. I hope this helps!

I really appreciate you taking the time to consider whether this suggested feature would be beneficial to your product. I hope so! Thanks again.

Ok so that's already there, you can see all the placeholders/keywords here https://pdfsam.org/customize-file-names/ In your case would be something like [BASENAME]_[FILENUMBER}
