Peru | Data Improvements

Open salimbaidoun-tomtom opened this issue 2 years ago • 1 comments

Project description

Goal

To improve the map quality in Peru, we propose to make data improvements by sharing challenges that can help fix data errors, and add or edit certain kinds of features or tags.

When appropriate, our team will also work on these challenges. If a challenge is more suitable to be solved without organised help, we will leave it for local users interested in completing the tasks. Challenges like this will be indicated as such in the overview below.

How to participate

Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project by participating in our MapRoulette challenges. Here is the extended documentation for using MR. Note that sometimes additional instructions are provided within the challenges. We also strongly encourage you to make use of the resources listed in the OSM wiki section Peru wikipage while you are editing.

Challenges

Active Challenges

  • Peru - Spiky Land Use This challenge helps refine land use features with unusual shapes in OSM, improving map clarity and avoiding potential routing or visualization issues. These updates will make navigation more accurate and benefit for both local users and global applications.

    Inactive Challenges

  • Peru - Sharp Angles on Highways Correct roads with unrealistically and odd sharp angles (less than 45 degrees).

  • Peru - Fix Inconsistent Highway Intersections Through this challenge TomTom is working with OSM to fix cases where highways intersect without a common node. Road crossings without a common node lead to navigation issues due to lack of junction's indication and affect the OSM map's usability and accuracy for all users.

  • Peru - Fix Building & Highway intersections This challenge addresses instances where building shapes intersect with highways (roads), such intersections lead to visual errors and can negatively impact routing as the map incorrectly suggests that roads run through buildings. Resolving these ensures better map usability and more reliable routing for all users.

  • Perú - Corregir Edificios que Intersecan | Peru - Fix Intersecting Buildings: The goal is to identify and fix cases where building polygons intersect with each other. Resolving these issues ensures a cleaner map layout, making it easier to understand the real-world structure of areas.

  • Perú - Conectar Viales Aislados | Peru - Connect Isolated Highways: which its objective is to enhance the accuracy and reliability of global road networks. By identifying and fixing isolated highway segments, the routing and navigation for millions of users worldwide can improve.

  • Perú - Corregir Intersecciones Inconsistentes de Carreteras | Peru - Fix Inconsistent Highway Intersections: To identify and fix highway intersections that lack a common node. These intersections can cause navigation issues and impact the overall map experience.

  • Peru - Add roundabout tag aims to improve routing and navigation by identifying and adding missing roundabout tags. Many roads that are actually roundabouts lack the proper tags in OSM, leading to incorrect navigation and impacting the map's overall accuracy. Proper tagging of roundabouts ensures accurate navigation guidance, preventing confusion and improving the user experience for everyone relying on OSM-based maps and apps.

  • Peru - Fix Building & Highway intersections Identify and fix, if needed, cases where a way with tag highway=* intersects with a building. The fix may be either to correct the building footprint or to correct the route of the highway. Use appropriate available sources to decide on the best action to resolve the conflict.

  • Peru - Connect Isolated Highways Leads are generated based on analysis of road classes and their connection to the rest of the road network. the goal is to connect the hanging roads to the nearest road network based on the available imagery and/or probe sources.

  • Peru - Add Surface to Highway We queried OSM for ways with certain highway=* values where the surface tag was missing.

  • Peru - Add Highways Leads were generated by a modified version of Osmose check ‘1250 – objects intersection’ with certain situations, such as those related to pedestrian paths, removed from the scope.

  • Peru - Fix Incorrect Highway Junctions The objective of this challenge is to Identify and fix if needed, cases where highway junctions are incorrectly or imprecisely mapped. We excluded pedestrian paths and cycleways along and applied a distance buffer to generate a set of incorrect situations for junctions.

  • Peru - Fix Spiky Buildings Examine the set of potentially erroneous buildings that we’ve identified. Visit the locations on the map and assess whether the building shapes seem inaccurate.

Edits based on map feedback

We make improvements to OSM based on user feedback submitted for the TomTom map after comparing and ensuring that it is also valid for OSM.

Here is a list of the types of edits to be made, provided they do not conflict with others’ edits and a local source is available:

  • Highways

    • Adding or correcting highways

    • Adding or correcting link roads

    • Adding or adjusting bridges, tunnels, layers, or relations

    • Adding or updating lanes and related properties

    • Adding or updating traffic signs

    • Adding or updating access barriers

    • Adding or updating turn restrictions

  • Addresses

    • Adding or correcting addresses

    • Updating the position of address nodes, usually when an object has multiple addresses

    • Adding or correcting names of ways

  • POIs (Points of Interest)

    • Adding POIs

    • Correcting POI locations

    • Adding or correcting POI information

    • Resolving POI-land use discrepancies

    • Handling POI closures

  • Land use

    • Adding land use

    • Modifying existing land use extent

  • Buildings

    • Adding buildings

    • Updating building type

    • Adjusting building shape

  • Water

    • Adding or realigning rivers, streams, and lakes.
  • Railways

    • Adding railway tracks

    • Realigning railway tracks

    • Adding or adjusting railway infrastructure tags such as bridges, tunnels, level crossings

  • Ferry lines

    • Adding ferry lines

    • Realigning ferry lines

    • Adding ferry terminals

These are incidental edits spread over time starting Sept, 4th 2023. We follow local guidelines and, if needed, consult with the community before making an update.

Geographical scope

Data improvements will be made across the whole country.

Announcements

TomTom organised editing

We will follow the Organised Editing Guidelines for this project. TomTom will not make any edits until two weeks after the project announcement. Here is our Organised Editing page, including a list of our editors.

How to find TomTom's edits

All edits made by our team have the hashtag #tt or #tomtom.

Sources for editing

  • Esri World Imagery
  • Bing Maps Aerial

For some OSM map edits TomTom editors will use proprietary sources for support. These will typically be in situations where there is not sufficient evidence using the available sources in OSM editors themselves. The proprietary sources will be ground-level imagery and GPS traces, both collected by TomTom's mobile mapping vans. On occasion, we will also use sources collected from a field survey by one of TomTom's sourcing specialists who have visited the location and collected data to support the required map updates.

How to reach out

If you have remarks about a specific edit of ours, please drop a comment in the changeset, and we will do our best to respond thoughtfully. Or, you can also:

  • send a message to the project lead Salim,
  • join the conversation in osmPe,
  • email [email protected] for general questions about TomTom's activities.

The 'Sources for editing' section updated with the below information-

  1. Removed Maxar Premium Imagery from the list as it's not available anymore in OSM
  2. Added a description of proprietary sources to support editing
