Bulgaria | Data Improvements

Open salimbaidoun-tomtom opened this issue 2 years ago • 1 comments

Project description

Goal

To improve the map quality in Bulgaria, we propose to make data improvements by sharing challenges that can help fix data errors, and add or edit certain kinds of features or tags.

When appropriate, our team will also work on these challenges. If a challenge is more suitable to be solved without organised help, we will leave it for local users interested in completing the tasks. Challenges like this will be indicated as such in the overview below.

How to participate

Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project by participating in our MapRoulette challenges. Here is the extended documentation for using MR. Note that sometimes additional instructions are provided within the challenges. We also strongly encourage you to make use of the resources listed in the OSM wiki section Bg:WikiProject Bulgaria while you are editing.

Challenges

Active challenges

  • Bulgaria - Barriers Disconnected from Highways This challenge is designed to address potential mapping issues where barriers are located near highways but are not properly connected. Fixing these ensures that navigation and routing services provide accurate access information and prevent misleading directions.

    Inactive challenges

  • Bulgaria - Fix objects without tags. Focused on validating and fixing objects without tags.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Building and Highway Intersection. When buildings intersect highways in OSM data, it creates routing errors (e.g., suggesting roads pass through structures) and visual inaccuracies that undermine navigation apps, emergency services, and other application and systems relying on OSM.

  • Bulgaria - Mapping Missing Buildings in Plovdiv locating and adding missing buildings that could be residential, commercial, or other structures and will leave this to your reliable sources and knowledge as your mapping efforts help improve OSM data that numerous organizations, Universities and even individuals utilize in their day to day applications.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Spiky Buildings This collaborative effort requires a review and possible geometry correction, as the challenge identifies buildings with potential issues due to their unusual shape. It is aimed at improving data quality, accuracy, and aesthetics of OpenStreetMap, making it a more valuable resource for a wide range of users and applications.

  • Bulgaria - Fix objects without tags Proper tagging is crucial for maintaining a well-organized and informative map. Untagged objects can be confusing and decrease the overall value of the data.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Intersecting Buildings

  • Bulgaria - Fix Building & Highway intersections Identify and fix, if needed, cases where a way with tag highway=* intersects with a building. The fix may be either to correct the building footprint or to correct the route of the highway. Use appropriate available sources to decide on the best action to resolve the conflict.

  • Bulgaria - Connect Isolated Highways Leads are generated based on analysis of road classes and their connection to the rest of the road network. the goal is to connect the hanging roads to the nearest road network based on the available imagery and/or probe sources.

  • Bulgaria - Add Surface to Highway the team queried OSM for ways with certain highway=* values where the surface tag was missing. This approach can help you detect and include any missing surface tags on a road network.

This challenge needs the use of appropriate aerial imagery source/s, street level imagery service, and local knowledge to investigate the situation and assign the most appropriate value to the surface key. For small gaps, the value of the surface key on the surrounding ways could serve as a hint.

  • Bulgaria - Add Highways Our team conducted a spatial comparison between TomTom’s in-house road centerlines and the OSM road network. Through this analysis, we have identified locations where ways are missing. The objective of this challenge is to identify and add any necessary missing ways. We trust that mappers will utilize the most appropriate imagery and their local knowledge to investigate each situation and add the missing ways if they confirm their existence.

  • Bulgaria - Fix inconsistent bridge and tunnel tagging Based on OSM Wiki guidelines, we developed a process which detected inconsistently tagged bridges and tunnels. The objective is to identify and fix cases where the bridge or tunnel has an incorrect tag.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Building and Water Intersections Our team has identified these challenges through a spatial comparison of water features and buildings available in OSM. We would greatly appreciate your review and resolution of the tasks involved, which include identifying and fixing situations where a water feature intersects with a building.

  • Bulgaria - Add Missing Forests and Green Areas Upon conducting a spatial comparison with TomTom's map database, our TomTom team has identified instances of missing forests and green areas. The goal is to recognize and, if necessary, add these absent forests and green spaces using your local expertise and appropriate resources. It's important to note that certain areas might possess officially designated names that require validation prior to their inclusion.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Incorrect Highway Junctions the objective of this challenge is to Identify and fix if needed, cases where highway junctions are incorrectly or imprecisely mapped. We improve overall OpenStreetMap (OSM) route network quality by solving real errors in the data. We found leads based on spatial analysis of OSM data. We excluded pedestrian paths and cycleways along and applied a distance buffer to generate a set of incorrect situations for junctions, that you will find in this challenge. Why is it important? to ensure that highway junctions are connected within OSM is crucial for optimised routing. When road elements are disconnected or imprecisely mapped, it can degrade the navigation experience for routing applications that rely on OSM data, leading to inefficient directions, delays, and potential navigation errors.

  • Bulgaria - Fix Incorrect Junctions on Roundabouts We’ve developed new checks aimed at identifying and correcting cases where two or more highways are connected to the same node on a roundabout. According to the [OSM wiki documentation], highways entering and exiting a roundabout should never connect to the same node on that roundabout. Why is this important? Fixing such situations will enable routing applications that rely on OSM data to correctly recognise the situation, providing improved guidance when entering or exiting a roundabout. The Leads were detected based on a query of OSM data. We compared the number of highways entering and exiting a roundabout to find situations with a high number of highways or a low number of highways that are part of junction=roundabout or junction=circular. We excluded pedestrian paths, cycleways and roads that are located on different levels (bridges, tunnels).

Edits based on map feedback

We make improvements to OSM based on user feedback submitted for the TomTom map after comparing and ensuring that it is also valid for OSM.

Here is a list of the types of edits to be made, provided they do not conflict with others’ edits and a local source is available:

  • Highways

    • Adding or correcting highways

    • Adding or correcting link roads

    • Adding or adjusting bridges, tunnels, layers, or relations

    • Adding or updating lanes and related properties

    • Adding or updating traffic signs

    • Adding or updating access barriers

Announcements

TomTom organised editing

We will follow the Organised Editing Guidelines for this project. TomTom will not make any edits until two weeks after the project announcement. Here is our Organised Editing page, including a list of our editors.

How to find TomTom's edits

All edits made by our team have the hashtag #tt or #tomtom.

Sources for editing

  • Esri World Imagery
  • Bing Maps Aerial

For some OSM map edits TomTom editors will use proprietary sources for support. These will typically be in situations where there is not sufficient evidence using the available sources in OSM editors themselves. The proprietary sources will be ground-level imagery and GPS traces, both collected by TomTom's mobile mapping vans. On occasion, we will also use sources collected from a field survey by one of TomTom's sourcing specialists who have visited the location and collected data to support the required map updates.

How to reach out

If you have remarks about a specific edit of ours, please drop a comment in the changeset, and we will do our best to respond thoughtfully. Or, you can also:
