Spain | Data Improvements
Project description
Goal
To improve the map quality in Spain, we propose to make data improvements by sharing challenges that can help fix data errors, and add certain kinds of features.
When appropriate, our team will also work on these challenges. If a challenge is more suitable to be solved without organised help, we will leave it for local users interested in completing the tasks. Challenges like this will be indicated as such in the overview below.
How to participate
Anyone is welcome to contribute to this project by participating in our MapRoulette challenges. Here is the extended documentation for using MR. Note that sometimes additional instructions are provided within the challenges. We also strongly encourage you to make use of the resources listed in the OSM wiki section Spanish labeling guidelines while you are editing.
Here is the current set of challenges.

Simple areas are mapped in OSM by creating a closed way and tagging it as an area object rather than a line. Relations of the type multipolygon are used to represent complex areas with holes inside or consisting of multiple disjoint areas. A multipolygon relation can have any number of ways in the role outer (the outline) and any number of ways in the role inner (the holes), and these must form valid rings to build a multipolygon. When a relation of the type multipolygon consists of only one member, which is a simple area, an error is logged.
Buildings with extremely sharp angles will be identified and corrected if needed.
Features intended to be a polygon should be correctly tagged. When the tag indicates that the object should be a polygon, but the geometry is built out of a NON-closed way, an error is logged.
The necessary edits will be made to fix cases where the tag on a way indicates that the object is a polygon feature, but the way does not meet the definition of a closed way because it is self-intersecting, or ways in a relation with the same role form a self-intersecting polygon
Challenges
Active challenges
-
Spain - Disconnected Barriers from Nearby Roads Made to focus on different types of barriers that are not connected to the highway located close to it to address connectivity and misleading access information.
-
Spain - Inconsistent Layer Tagging on Highways This challenge focuses on updating layer tags for highway features such as bridges and tunnels. By correcting missing or mislabeled layer tags, we improve OSM data accuracy and support safer, more reliable routing for everyone.
-
Spain - Spiky Land Use This challenge helps refine land use features with unusual shapes in OSM, improving map clarity and avoiding potential routing or visualization issues.
Inactive challenges

-
Spain - Incorrect Highway Tag Values The
highway=*tag is one of the most important in OpenStreetMap. It determines how roads and paths are interpreted by navigation systems, routing applications, and countless tools worldwide. When these values are misspelled, outdated, or inconsistent, they can: -
Confuse routing engines, leading to odd or inefficient directions
-
Affect accessibility information (for example, footpaths vs. residential streets)
-
Reduce the quality and reliability of OSM-based maps and services used in real life, from everyday navigation apps to humanitarian logistics
-
Spain - Missing Toll Information on Highways Adding tags which are missing from the access ramps to these highways
-
Spain - Sharp Angles on Highways Correct roads with unrealistically and odd sharp angles (less than 45 degrees).
-
Spain - Building and Highway Intersections Fix places in OpenStreetMap where buildings and highways (roads) overlap incorrectly.
-
Spain - Fix Spiky Buildings his challenge targets buildings with potentially inaccurate geometry, specifically those featuring very sharp angles (less than 15 degrees between walls meeting at a node). While most building corners are near 90 degrees, these sharp angles often indicate mapping errors.
-
Spain - Fix Conflicting Highway and Construction Tag focused on validating and correcting roads with conflicting highway=* and construction=* tags. Roads with outdated construction=* tags, even after completion, can be incorrectly rendered or excluded from navigation, routing and other types of applications, affecting OSM data usability.
-
Spain - Fix Too Close Junctions This challenge addresses junctions with very short road segments (less than 50cm) caused by potential roads being incorrectly placed. These close junctions often result from roads being improperly joined to major roads.
-
Spain - Duplicated Highways These duplications can cause navigation issues, inconsistent visualizations (e.g., doubled roads), and data processing errors due to tagging differences.
-
Spain - Advanced Map Editing: Correct Too Short Highways This challenge aims to improve OpenStreetMap data by reducing the number of short ways on highways, with attention to junctions where they result in incorrect intersections. These short ways can lead to issues with navigation, data analysis, and the overall appearance of the map, especially at junctions. By participating in this challenge, you will help improve the accuracy and appropriateness of junctions and highways elements by correcting short ways.
Data analysis done by TomTom suggests that there should be a road or track here in OSM, but it is missing.
- Isolated Highways - Madrid
- Connect Isolated Highways - Catalonia | Connectar vials aïllats - Catalunya | Conectar viales aislados – Cataluña
- España – Conectar Viales Aislados | Spain - Connect Isolated Highways
Leads are generated based on analysis of road classes and their connection to the rest of the road network. the goal is to connect the hanging roads to the nearest road network based on the available imagery and/or probe sources.
-
Spain - Fix Building and Highway Intersections TomTom has been diligently conducting spatial analysis, and during our study of highway and buildings features available in OSM, we discovered instances where buildings might be intersecting with a highway/road. The goal of this challenge is to identify and rectify any such situations, ensuring accurate map and data representation by utilizing reliable sources. It’s important to note that, as with any spatial analysis, there might be some false positives. If you come across a task that you believe is not a valid issue based on your knowledge, we kindly request you to mark it as “Not an issue.”
-
Spain - Duplicated Nodes having same coordinates the objective is to identify and fix if needed, cases where duplicated nodes having same location (coordinates) should be merged. It is more regarding highways mostly, but also have tasks for ways in general (parks, buildings). We found the leads based on spatial analysis of OSM data to fetch overlapping nodes. You might be asking why introducing such type of challenge? well, we are trying to support improving the overall OpenStreetMap (OSM) route network quality by solving real errors in the data, by clearly identifying objects junctions for which nodes are used in this case. Ensuring that highway junctions are connected within OSM is crucial for optimised routing. When road elements are disconnected due to duplicated (not merged) nodes, it can degrade the navigation experience for routing applications that rely on OSM data, leading to inefficient directions, delays, and potential navigation errors.
-
Spain - Fix Incorrect Highway Junctions Identify and fix if needed, cases where highway junctions are incorrectly or imprecisely mapped. We improve overall OpenStreetMap (OSM) route network quality by solving real errors in the data. Ensuring that highway junctions are connected within OSM is crucial for optimized routing. When road elements are disconnected or imprecisely mapped, it can degrade the navigation experience for routing applications that rely on OSM data, leading to inefficient directions, delays, and potential navigation errors.
-
Spain - Fix Inconsistent Highway Intersections: Leads were generated by a modified version of Osmose check ‘1250 – objects intersection’ with certain situations, such as those related to pedestrian paths, removed from the scope.
-
Spain - Fix Incorrect Highway Junctions: The objective of this challenge is to Identify and fix if needed, cases where highway junctions are incorrectly or imprecisely mapped. We excluded pedestrian paths and cycleways along and applied a distance buffer to generate a set of incorrect situations for junctions.

Spain - Update deprecated landuse=reservoir tags - Castilla-La Mancha: By updating deprecated tags, you are making the OpenStreetMap data more consistent and easier to work with for OSM users. This particular challenge helps you update the deprecated tag landuse=reservoir on water reservoirs in Portugal. The [OSM wiki]https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Deprecated_features#Deprecated_features) recommends that this tag be replaced by natural=water + water=reservoir. You will find detailed guidelines for how to do this in the left-hand instruction panel of each task. While editing the water bodies in this challenge, you may further improve them by correcting their outline if needed, or remove them if they no longer exist.

Empty Spain challenges
We've been analyzing a few regions in Spain and noticed a significant number of roads and buildings that need verification in certain areas. By adding these missing buildings and roads to OpenStreetMap, you're not just enhancing a map; you're positively impacting the lives of many people in those regions.
Geographical scope
Data improvements will be made across the whole country.

TomTom organised editing
We will follow the Organised Editing Guidelines for this project. TomTom will not make any edits until two weeks after the project announcement. Here is our Organised Editing page, including a list of our editors.
How to find TomTom's edits
All edits made by our team have the hashtag #tt or #tomtom.
Sources for editing
- PNOA Spain (preferred imagery source)
- Esri World Imagery
- Bing Maps Aerial
For some OSM map edits TomTom editors will use proprietary sources for support. These will typically be in situations where there is not sufficient evidence using the available sources in OSM editors themselves. The proprietary sources will be ground-level imagery and GPS traces, both collected by TomTom's mobile mapping vans. On occasion, we will also use sources collected from a field survey by one of TomTom's sourcing specialists who have visited the location and collected data to support the required map updates.
How to reach out
If you have remarks about a specific edit of ours, please drop a comment in the changeset, and we will do our best to respond thoughtfully. Or, you can also:
- send a message to the project lead Salim,
- join the conversation in Talk-es Mailing List, OpenStreetMap España Telegram, and Comunidad OSM en España, talk-cat, Comunitat catalana d’OSM, Comunitat en català d'OpenStreetMap Telegram
- email [email protected] for general questions about TomTom's activities.
The 'Sources for editing' section updated with the below information-
- Removed Maxar Premium Imagery from the list as it's not available anymore in OSM
- Added a description of proprietary sources to support editing
