I think @mihalicyn had a roadmap item to add idmapped mount support to virtiofs at one point but dont know whether it got implemented or landed.
@mihalicyn should this be reclassified as a Feature?
Can you try unmounting the /mnt dir inside the lxd snap mount namespace, it might be snaps environment holding onto the mount.
It needs to work with the bash version in core22 (stable and candidate) and core24 (edge).
