Remove wand of empowerment and implement a ring of empowerment
At first I wanted to learn how to code specifically to implement this item into a fork, but I'm simultaneously intimidated and lazy when it comes to learning C. So, if nothing else, I'm going to posit the idea here and see if it could work for CE. I'll simply copy/paste what I posted to reddit a couple years ago:
GJ, on the roguelike Discord, threw out this idea that I thought was too good not to share and hear opinions about it. During one of this community's many discussions about allies and wand of empowerment, this idea of the ring of empowerment was brought up.
I like this idea because, again GJ is the one who brought this up and I think I recall vaguely listening to this podcast, pender sees Brogue as kind of similar to "cardgame drafting" where you might have 2 or 3 viable builds per seed and it's up to you to piece together which one is best for that seed. Having a guaranteed wand just as in 1.7.4 seems to go against that line of thinking. 1.7.5 had its problems, however I do think it was a step in the right direction, and I think the idea of taking the concept of empowerment into a ring instead of a wand is one step closer to the "draft" approach integral to Brogue.
To paraphrase, what the ring of empowerment would do is increase the stats of each ally under your control instead of one single ally. As a consequence, there would be kind of a domino effect where suddenly the wand of domination is more useful and the allies you do find are more important as opposed to "here's my flying vampiric sapping (monkey/goblin/ogre)." Also, if the wand of empowerment were omitted from the game, what this means is you could no longer do that cheesy shit of taking the wand, using it on your ally, then taking another item. Rings of empowerment would be something you need to enchant like any other item. And if allies couldn't learn abilities, only have their stats increased, I feel that would make them more unique.
There are surely other considerations about such an item, like maybe balancing so it's not OP, but that's why I decided to post this on reddit so anyone who's not on Discord could voice their opinion. It's one of those things, maybe putting it out in the open will expose its flaws, or maybe it's a great idea after all.
