7.1 sound channels incorrect

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened this issue 9 years ago • 7 comments

Hi There,

I have a slight problem with sound channels which I am hoping someone can help
with.

Kind Regards,
Gary

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. MXF > WAV > Mono > 7.1
2.Create MXF
3. Create DCP

What is the expected output?

When I create a DCP in 7.1 the listed audio channels are L R C S LS RS Left
Centre & Right centre.

Our standard 7.1 set up is L R C S LS RS, LEFT BACK RIGHT BACK. So I assumed
that channels 7&8 in open dcp would be the correct channels to add our back
channels to, but these channels are empty when played back.

Is there any way in OpenDCP to assign audio to the dolby 7.1 system of Left
Back, Right Back?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

OpenDCP 0.27.1 on Mac OS X 10.8.

Please provide any additional information below.

The actual channels assignments are done on the digital server. In the case of
Dolby DSS, center should map to back. OpenDCP has been tested on a Dolby
DSS100/200 7.1, so it should work. It could be a misconfiguration on the server
side.

Hi. The server is a Doremi DCP2000. With sound processor Dolby CP750. We have
tried testing a 'proper DCP' and the rear channels work as expected. It's just
anything coming out of OPENDCP which seem to the a problem. Thanks

I have not been able to reproduce this issue. Could you upload a small test
audio MXF file with this issue?

According to this dolby 7.1 test DCP:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1jlgvjmJonZVDk0LTZlR291NzQ/edit?usp=sharing
channels 7/15 are for hearing impaired narration, and 8/16 are for visually
impaired narration.
For some unknown reason, channels 9, 10, 13, and 14 are silent.
Left and Right Surround seem to get split up to following channels and
terminology:
Channel 5: no longer "Left Surround" but "Left SIDE Surround"
Channel 6: no longer "Right Surround" but "Right SIDE Surround"
Channel 11: "Left REAR Surround"
Channel 12: "Right REAR Surround"

Our 7.1 equipped cinema (Doremi DCP-2K4 in combination with a datasat AP20
audio processor) also plays the above linked test DCP "correctly", while
everything from OpenDCP works only up to 5.1.
Irrespective of the narration channels, we are not equipped to test those or
i'm not aware how to.

OpenDCP 0.28.1 GUI for windows 64bit here.
Setting it to 5.1 and checking "Hearing/Visually Impaired" seems to produce the
same channel mappings as choosing 7.1 without HI/VI.
Setting it to 7.1 plus HI/VI seems to map "Left Center" and "Right Center" to 7
and 8 but moves HI/VI to channels 9 and 10 so this can not be correct.

Also, choosing HI/VI while 7.1 is checked, changes the setting form 7.1 back to
5.1.
Creating a 7.1-HI/VI mxf auido file is only possible if HI/VI is checked for
5.1 before selecting 7.1. But that's probably only a minor cosmetic glitch.

For these tests i used opencinematools to unwrap all audio mxf files back to
wav, and analyzed them thereafter with audacity to perceive stated results.

On an unrelated note, i want to express my gratitude for the project OpenDCP.
The next donation is probably imminent. ;)

Hello,

first, thanks for openDCP I've been using it a lot for my own movies the last
year.

However I've started using 7.1 and seem to have the same problem as some of the
other people here.

I'm using openDCP 0.30 on a MacMini (10.9.5), the server is an Doremi ShowVault
2K4 with IMB, the 7.1 test dcp shows that everything works.

when I want to make a 7.1 mxf I get this interface: (see attached .png), so I
cannot select the audio files that I want to put in the rear speakers... I can
put .wavs in left center and right center, but these don't play through the
rear speakers.

so, basically, my question is: what should I do to have sound through the rear
channels?

all the best,

Stefaan Quix

I'd also like to chime in and say that I'm having similar issues.

The dcp is being tested on a dolby dss200, with an integrated media block. Playing proper dcps with 7.1 sound from other places works perfect through our dolby cp650. I have tried making the audio mxf from the option for 7.1, 5.1 with H/I (adding the back surrounds in the newly opened spots), and 7.1 with H/I with the back surrounds in the regular back surround spots, in the H/I spots, and doubled in both. I have also tried using a multichannel (8) wav, and letting opendcp figure it out on it's own. No matter what I seem to do, the last two channels never show up. This is using openDCP 0.30.0 on a mac pro and also a macbook pro.
