perform benchmarking
The current code is unabashedly unoptimized, having some throughput measurement would be nice.
It would also be nice to attempt to answer the question "what performance impact will this have"
[ ] write basic performance benchmark [ ] allow configurable buffering to prevent slow clients from impacting throughput
