Could this move to python-poetry?
I was thinking that maybe this repo could be in https://github.com/python-poetry, and could be continued by the Poetry maintainers (if they are interested).
I'm currently using it less than before. To get this same functionality this plugin provides I've been using other tools. But it seems some people have liked it and I think moving it to the Poetry org might make it easier to continue it (instead of deprecating it). It could be handled by the same Poetry team, making sure it's compatible and aligned with the rest of Poetry and the team's objectives.
What do you think? @sdispater, @abn, @radoering, @dimbleby, @neersighted, @finswimmer, @mkniewallner, @Secrus, @branchvincent
it seems that the reason for this project existing is to avoid importlib-metadata because you are using a python older than 3.8 - anyway that is what https://github.com/tiangolo/poetry-version-plugin?tab=readme-ov-file#why says
in that case I would suggest that it has likely done its job and run its course by now - python 3.7 has already gone end of life, I see no objection to using importlib.metadata?
That's a good point @dimbleby!
I think currently the only reason for this to exist then would be to allow to set the version in a git tag. Although that was a feature someone added, but I actually never used it myself.
I'll wait a bit to hear from others, and if nothing changes, I'll just add a note saying that this is no longer necessary, and then deprecate it and probably archive it. Thanks!
@tiangolo I suspect the answer would be no from the core team as we do not really have the bandwidth to maintain more things. 😅
And to be fair, iirc, the plugin was born out of Poetry not wanting to provide this mechanism natively. This is still the case. So, I suspect it is best to archive it or transfer to another maintainer who really wants it.
For what it is worth, well done on maintaining it so far and so long. I'm sure the plugin found good use for a number of Poetry users.
Thank you for confirming @abn! Yep, I imagined this was the case.
And totally get on the bandwidth side too.
Thank you both for replying and for doing it so quickly!
@tiangolo while the team might not be interested, I could take the project over on my own if you want to hand it over.
Cool! Let's try this 🚀
I just invited you to the repo @Secrus. 😎
BTW, if I don't reply or notice something, you can ping me on DMs or email, as in many cases I miss GitHub notifications (there are too many 😅).
I just marked this project as deprecated with some suggestions for alternatives, I just wanted to mention it here just in case.
