Add a link explaining Release Channels to the download pages

Open inattee opened this issue 7 months ago • 3 comments

We have a new article on SUMO with a quick overview of the different release channels and links to further information on each. I'd like to get a link added to the downloads page pointing to this article.

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/choosing-thunderbird-release-channel

Proposing to add a "Read more" link at the end of the text in the warning notices for each release channel.

Alternatively it can be added below under the "More Information" section.

I haven't verified how localizable this might be, but a link could also alternatively be added to the intro:

channels

Ideally we don't want the reader to navigate away from the download page, so I would hesitate putting so prominently in the main paragraph message. To that point I think the best place for it to live is under More Information below with a link "Release Channels Overview"

Also, please update the warning message text for the Thunderbird Release and ESR to the following:

Release channel: "The official Thunderbird Release channel. This release is intended for users who want all available new features and bug fixes on a monthly basis. "

ESR: The official Extended Support Release channel. This release is intended for users who want all available new features on an annual basis and stability/security fixes on a monthly basis.

As part of this, for the Release channel, we want users to be made aware that the Release channel doesn't support all add-ons. Users should be made aware of the add-on compatibility checker for determining if their desired add-ons are supported.

I think we'll need to make this point and the compatibility checker more prominent on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/choosing-thunderbird-release-channel and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-add-ons-frequently-asked-questions. And, as @inattee mentioned in this issue report, we can add the link to https://support.mozilla.org/kb/choosing-thunderbird-release-channel on the download page.
