Font size controls removed, now message list font size is too big and cannot be reduced

  • [x] I will describe the problem with as much detail as possible.

App

Thunderbird for Android

App version

11.1

Where did you get the app from?

Google Play

Android version

16

Device model

Pixel 6

Steps to reproduce

In Thunderbird : Go to settings, display, global ( font size option is no longer there )

In Android system settings : go do display, Screen, Display and Text size Confirm Text size is set to the smallest possible size.

Expected behavior

Using the smallest possible System text size, the message list font size should be smaller than in this screenshot from Thunderbird version 10, with in-app font size set to "Very small" (beyond which there is still "Smallest")

Image

Actual behavior

Message list font size is actually much larger than before, therefore fewer messages and less of the message previews are displayed, with the same Density and Preview lines settings as before.

Thanks for your work on Thunderbird. I am a long time Thunderbird/K9 mail user, but I'm unhappy with the effect of the removal of the font size options because the fonts are all too big now even with the System text set to minimum size. It is less efficient to view messages, and I personally find it unpleasant to look at these large fonts.

We’ve removed these settings as part of the ongoing UI redesign, since the previous way of changing font sizes no longer works with the new design system. We’re working on alternative options to bring back some customization in a future update.

I added this to our epic for the message list rewrite #8838 for consideration.

More or less - when can we expect proper font handling? Weeks? Months? Years? I'm using K-9 for a few days, I wouldn't like to have to used to it to much.

+1 to this whole issue, but the other way around. I am not that young anymore and my sight didn’t improve with age, so I would need large characters. However, my problem is even more complicated: I also use non-proportional font for the text of emails (set in the Settings/View) and Android doesn’t seem to scale those together with the other fonts (I have larger fonts set in the system).

Those are the same apps, they've said... No, they are not. K-9 has font size controls, Thunderbird does not. I've tried Thunderbird 13 and 14 beta. Both have no font size configuration while K-9 v. 12-13 have. Still it's so lame like small-medium-big, instead of letting user to know his preferred size.

I am visually impaired. I have set the font size in the system settings already to nearly max. In K-9 I can set the font size for the message body to 200 (probably %). Then it's fine for me to read.

So if you fix this on Thunderbird, please make sure to include a good range of options.

As stated above, being able to use larger fonts us essential for many users. This is especially true since K-9 does not honour the font size increase of Android.

I am back on K-9 . versiFffccelon 13...

Me too. This is an accessibility issue and partially-sighted users should not update K9 Mail to version 14.0.

I'm using K-9. Recently got the version 14 update and it rendered the app unusable. Text has become extremely small.

It was very frustrating when I went into the settings looking for the font options only to find they had been removed. At least from the settings menu. I was able to find them with search. And could change the size so that I can actually read emails. But the setting does not stick and K-9 reverts to the tiny unreadable font when the app is launched the next time. I had to uninstall and go back to version 13.

I hope this issue gets fixed soon.
