A warning is fine imho. But atleast for migrating accounts this feature is rather handy. And yes, should be done otherwise, but I have seen people doing that, esp. with the desktop client.

@kaystrobach thank you for your input. I don’t know the exact use-case when it’s handy for migrating accounts. But otherwise it's confusing. I checked with gmail and yahoo. Neither allows this. Gmail stops you from adding same account again. In-case of Yahoo they let you proceed with the flow but you eventually end up with no additional inbox.

@kewisch please let me know if you have any suggestion for this.

This is no bug but a perfect feature as long as #1117 is still open. It is suggested there as workaround.

If you want to use multiple identities with different SMTP settings with the same account, you can simply

  1. create the account multiple times,
  2. define a distinct standard-identity for outgoing mails in each of the accounts,
  3. (optional) deactivate synchronization of ingoing mails (IMAP) for all accounts except of one to save traffic.

Why should you want to do this?

  • As described in #1117, people are having multiple SMTP configurations (identities), which they want to use in the same mail account.
  • It is desirable to automatically save sent mails from different identities with their own SMTP configuration to the "sent"-folder of one identical IMAP configuration. This is achieved by the steps described above.

Hence, please don't remove the ability to create multiple accounts with same IMAP configuration as long as #1117 is open.
