Steps to reproduce

  • Install v11.0b2 from F-Droid
  • Configure your email account (I used a Gmail account and an Office 365 account)
  • Go to Settings -> select your account -> Folder poll frequency -> 15 minutes
  • Go back to the account drawer -> Make sure the right account is selected at the top of the drawer -> Manage folders -> Inbox -> Enable all options:
    • Show in top group
    • Show folder
    • Enable sync
    • Enable Push
    • Notifications
    • Unify
  • Send an email to this address from a different account
  • Visit your target mailbox (in this case Gmail) via a different device or the Web client and confirm that the email has landed in your inbox
  • Visit your "Unified Inbox" in Thunderbird for Android and wait for the email to be delivered
  • Observe that the email doesn't arrive until the 15 minutes expires, occasionally not even then. The only certain way to receive emails is manually "pull down refresh" your inbox, at which point they arrive immediately.
  • This seems to work fine in the prod version v10.0 F-Droid and in v9.0 Google Play, so we most likely broke something in Beta.

Expected behavior

  • Emails to show up in near-realtime with Push enabled

Actual behavior

  • Push is enabled but emails aren't reliably delivered into the Inbox folder until a manual refresh.
  • Push functionality doesn't seem to work at all in the Beta version.

Just wanted to add that the Thunderbird for Android Beta app has background data enabled and is exempt from memory optimisation (early process kill in the background when not used)

There are some light steps on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configure-push-email-thunderbird-android which might help. Have you given Thunderbird the alarms permission on beta?

I don't see anything obvious in the logs. We've seen this reported before 11.0 in a few different ways but it has been hard to pinpoint.

Yeah, I gave all possible permissions to the beta app. And I only had push enabled for the two inbox folders - one in each account. I looked through the logs as well, before attaching them, and there was nothing immediately obvious. I only attached them to play by the rules.

With that said, I exported my settings from beta v11.0b2, switched back to the prod release v10 from F-Droid, imported my settings back and everything's working as expected, so what I can tell is that it's not a configuration issue.

Ok, thank you. These are super tricky to debug unfortunately, but I'll see if there is anything substantial we changed between 10 and 11 that could impact this. I know we changed foreground permissions due to Android requirements, maybe this is related.
