Bring back "more from sender"

Open elhennig opened this issue 4 years ago • 8 comments

Since 5.709 the action "more from sender" is not available anymore. I find this action very usefull and I am missing it very much! Please add this to the message actions menu and possibly to the visible message actions, too.

I don't like the idea of making this an action in the toolbar. But clicking on the contact picture in the message view screen could open a popup where one of the options is "More from this sender".

Then the function would not be available in the messages list, which makes it very handy as that is the place where the contents of folders are shown and handled. So I would really like to see this in the actions menu when I select certain messages. If there are messages selected from more than one sender, the search should look for all sender addresses of the marked messages. Also I am not using the contact image display at all.

@elhennig: Your workflow seems to be very special. We try to make it possible in K-9 Mail. But we won't optimize for it.

How exactly the functionality will be made available still needs to be figured out. Maybe we will display the contact picture in the message view even if it was disabled for the message list. Or maybe we'll find another place where we can display per-person actions/navigation options.

The "how" I will not comment, that's not my job ;-). Anyway the use case is: With the old version I was cleaning up my inbox by long pressing the message in the message list, more from sender and then select all found messages and delete them. I found this very useful as it was very simple and easy without to many necessary actions. I miss this functionality in the beta version and I would really appreciate it if this could be added again to the actions after selecting at least one message in the list (like move, copy, mark as important, spam and select all). I guess "more from sender" would really fit in into this list of actions very well. Opening the message, pressing the sender image (that I do not use or like) is too complicated compared to the previous solution from the productive version IMHO.

I second this. This is probably the only feature I have missed since I upgraded to 5.800.

I miss this feature too in the new version. Please bring it back!

This is labeled as an enhancement but wouldn't this be more of a regression? Was the feature purposefully removed? If so why?

After almost 2 years it would be great if there would be a plan at least when this is scheduled to be part of a release?

Another 8 months later, the issue is still not planned for a coming release. What is so difficult to bring this functionality back? I still find the removal of this function (aka regression) a great lack of usability.

For the past few years mainly the only code contributor to this project has been @cketti which we should all be very grateful. Additionally @elhennig your comment here is odd:

The "how" I will not comment, that's not my job ;-).

It's all of our jobs. K-9 is open source and free to all. This means it is your job and my job and everyone else that uses the software. We can't expect one person to do all this work without the help, or for-profit compensation from the community that also uses it.

That being said, it's odd that comments are being marked as off-topic when they are very much on-topic. My guess is the maintainers of this repository are looking for the input they have requested to get this feature re-implemented, but they have not communicated such and shows poor communication and cooperation on both the maintainers end and the issuers sides.

The best way forward is instead of marking comments as "off-topic" we instead communicate to address the concerns or questions of those inside of the issue with a finalized list of how to either get this implemented or that it won't be at all. Second, it is important that any guidance that they provide is followed-up by us the users that would like to get this implemented and if at all possible help with the relevant code and design to get it working.

We are all in this together and all of us need to pull our relevant weight to keep the project great. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Not be misunderstood: I am very grateful to @cketti for all the work he has done / is doing for this project!

Unfortunately, I am not able to help with coding and my comment that the "how to implement" is not my job refers to exactly that fact. It was merely an answer to the statement, that my use case was very special. I guess, searching for an address of a message or for other messages from that sender by pushing one button is not such a special usecase and with my software (not coding) knowledge this should not be too complicated to implement. However, and that is what I referred to with saying the "how" is not my job, I cannot suggest more than bringing the functionality back and cannot suggest where this button should be and how the search itself should be implemented.

I still find the removal of functionality a regression and with this ticket I just wanted to request to have the function back. Or, if there is no chance to implement it , refuse and close this request.
