Blank message list and reading pane after upgrading Thunderbird
- Thunderbird version: 115.9.0 (64-bit)
- Thunderbird Conversation version: 4.1.6
- Operating System: Windows 10
After the last update of Thunderbird, the message list and reading pane are empty (blank space). Switching between folders and restarting Thunderbird didn't help.
After disabling the extension and restarting Thunderbird everything works as expected. It works normally after enabling the extension again, but only until the next Thunderbird restart. After restarting the message list and reading pane are blank again.
I couldn't reproduce the issue on my Windows 11 laptop. It only happens on my Windows 10 Desktop.
Same here:
- Thunderbird version: Beta 125.0b5 (64 bit)
- Thunderbird Conversation version: 4.1.7
- Operating System: Windows 11
Is there anything on the error console when you hit this? (Tools -> Developer Tools -> Error console)
Is it this one?
Those are only deprecation warnings, and so shouldn't be affecting the add-on. Is there anything different just after startup?
Well, just after startup & selecting a message.

- Thunderbird version: 115.10.1 (64 Bit)
- Thunderbird Conversation version: 4.1.7

@maiermic it would be helpful if you could also check the error console as per the above, just in case there's something different there.
I disabled the Add-on and restarted Thunderbird. The list was shown. I enabled it and restarted. The list was not shown. I did this twice. After disabling, restarting, enabling and restarting again, the list was shown, even though Thunderbird Conversation was enabled. @artpoli @scottini Can someone reproduce this?
@Standard8 There are no logs (errors or warnings) related to Thunderbird Conversation at the moment. I check logs next time, the issue occurs. I don't want to restart again, since I'm happy that it is working right now, but might not after the next restart  I briefly checked the logs, when the issue occured last time and can't remember that I saw something relevant, but I can't say for sure right now.

I can confirm the exact same behavior. It seems that the conversations extension no longer functions in the new update. I have to keep it off in order to select mailboxes and read emails.
OK, except that now, after another update of Thunderbird today (and another restart) I re-enabled Conversations Extension and it seems to work again. I will keep a watch on it, but seems something more random is happening with the extention?
I'm currently on Thunderbird version 115.11.0 and didn't have any issues with the Conversations Extension anymore.
@scottini @artpoli Do you still have issues? Otherwise, I suggest to close this issue.
Hi, I have the same pb with Thunderbird v115.13.0 + Conversations Extension v4.1.7 on macOS v12.7.5 but not at every startup of Thunderbird.
I get this in the Error Console :
and after clearing the Error Console and selecting the first message I get this :
I have the same issue (Conversations v4.2.1). After upgrading to TB 128 it is still there but only for some emails. When I encounter such a message:
- I click to open it in "classic view"
- Go back to main view (still no content)
- Select other email and back to the faulty email
- Email is now displayed correctly
PS: I have not seen any error message
@sebma your issue is a Thunderbird specific issue - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1909621
You may be able to avoid it by going into Add-ons & Themes, selecting the spanner icon next to Thunderbird Conversations and turning off the Between column (if you don't use that column).
Just to add another note here, the issue recurs periodically for me, I'd say once every couple months, for whatever reason, I will again have a blank reading pane, but the solution is always to disable the add-on, restart Thunderbird, re-enable the add-on, and then it works correctly again.
