Add the ability to show comments removed by the moderator in the comment thread

Open K4LCIFER opened this issue 2 years ago • 1 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Currently, as far as I'm aware, you have no indication within a comment thread that a moderator has removed any comments. You're only way of viewing this is by looking through the modlog. Users should be aware of when a mod is taking action in a comment section. Comment removals should be as transparently done as possible, and should not be done in the background.

Describe the solution you'd like

Simply replace the removed comment something like "Comment removed by moderator", and then add the removal reason and a link to the part of the modlog containing the removed comment.

Describe alternatives you've considered

none.

Additional context

none.

@K4LCIFER Can you provide a sample thread that has comments deleted by a moderator? How are they displayed on the Lemmy UI? Thanks!

https://lemmy.world/comment/15720664 here's one that appears in the modlog.

would be nice if tapping on the comment showed it before deletion.

Hey so since this issue was created, this feature is now available as of PR #1628. I had forgotten there was a related issue. 😊

This change has been released for a while. With this I will go ahead and close this issue.

I think the issue also is about making it convenient, long pressing it and uncovering it in a hidden menu is a lot less convenient than anytime a comment being removed by moderator being able to tap it and see the modlog instantly

I'm totally willing to have a conversation about this, but I think it's somewhat intentional. If it were trivial to view deleted mesages, then there almost wouldn't be a point in deleting them at all. If you're using the web UI, you have to make a choice to go into the modlog and find the corresponding comment. In Thunder, we've made that slightly easier by linking to the modlog directly from the comment (which, even as it is, could be considered a little too convenient). I think we'd need a pretty strong reason to make that feature any more prominent.

Plus, just speaking technically, it will almost certainly have to be in a submenu. Tapping the comment collapses children and long-pressing brings up the bottom sheet. So at the very least it will be two taps. And then we've organized the bottom sheet by high-level categories, so I don't think this would be considered a first-class action on the main sheet. So then we're talking 3 taps.

But again, happy to discuss!

I'm against the concept of moderators being able to permanently remove something that isn't illegal in the first place, so, this isn't compelling to me. I care vastly more about my ability to view the content than I do that a moderator didn't want me to.

Exactly, you've already made it convenient... why not make it completely convenient? Honestly, if it was just a hidden setting that'd be great. Hiding it behind a menu slightly doesn't accomplish much more than a setting to enable such a thing would.

Tapping the comment collapses children and long-pressing brings up the bottom sheet. So at the very least it will be two taps

it could be treated the same way as a URL, no?
