Hr for spelling Hour, when the H is silent

Open CrumpLab opened this issue 5 years ago • 2 comments

My question on stackoverflow for how to spell "Hour" with Hr when the H in Hour is silent was rejected...Everytime I spell "Hour" with Hr I seem to get the "H" in front of "our", even though that's not how I say it. Maybe a bug? or an enhancement, wasn't sure to how to label this.

edit: maybe downloading a space from wikipedia would be helpful here, I don't know if that is possible...or can empty nothing characters be downloaded from wikipedia? I think that would be better.

I think this is a problem in the underlying language, rather than in Hr. You can try to raise it with the relevant authorities, but I think it is difficult to implement a fix without any breaking changes... It is also difficult to know at calculation time if the uppercase h is supposed to be silent. Consider writing Horse. Here you would expect an h based on pronunciation, but if that word is later used as part of Horse d'oeuvre it suddenly becomes silent. There is no way Hr will be able to anticipate such uses

I understand this response, since it was way back in 2019 - but nowadays, in 2021, surely machine learning can effortlessly solve this by anticipating every use case? We can just train it on, say, Wikipedia articles.
