When do you aim for the first CRAN version?

CRAN was unhappy about the naming of the package.

I think that R users associate rgdal with reading spatial data from files or databases into R, or writing spatial data in R to external interfaces. That is not what rgdal2 lets you do. It seems that CRAN now supports gdal 2.0 (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-geo/2015-December/023833.html). Have you thought about a different name?

Okay, the rgdal2 name suggested to me that it was a re-boot of rgdal. Sounds like that's not the case

This code simply wraps the GDAL C call interface. It does pretty much everything rgdal does.
