Ranking for gender category "other"
As a nonbinary person I would like to see the rankings of other nonbinary people and hopefully myself. So I would like there to be a feature where I can select for "other" on the gender category. I've tried using the database query before, but since I don't have any SQL knowledge, this is unfortunately not a good solution. :/
I understand that there are some problems with this being added, for example:
"I only have filters for Male/Female. It was discussed a little on the issue, but due to the sensitivity around 'other' as well as if people want to be excluded from gender rankings they've changed their gender to other, I felt it best to not have that be a filter." Jambrose777 (https://github.com/thewca/worldcubeassociation.org/pull/5770#issue-716079544)
"[...] but as these are not that many competitors, these rankings would be quite empty. Furthermore, this allows finding all competitors with "other" gender. I am not sure if these competitors would be fine with that." Laura-O (https://github.com/thewca/worldcubeassociation.org/issues/168#issuecomment-328373083)
Of course I can only speak for myself, but I would love for this to be added!
One solution to people wanting to be excluded from gender rankings, which Jambrose777 mentions, could simply be a check-box for this in the settings or to an ability to choose to not have a gender on your profile.
Another solution regarding the lack of competitors with "other" gender that Laura-O mentions is to add an additional gender marker which could be "nonbinary" or "X", just as two examples. However I feel like this only adds unecessary complications. And lastly, I feel like if you agree to show your competitive scores on the website you should be okay with people seeing that, even if your category doesn't include a lot of other people.
I would love to hear your thoughts!
- I tend to agree that an opt-in for being displayed under an "Other" category seems like a good way to go
- Perhaps we want some threshold of results for "Other" users in an event before it is available as a filter? (ie, don't display a scorecard with only 2 "Other" users? Excluding stuff like blind events)
- Still needs further discussion and input from non-binary community members - if anyone wants to stimulate that discussion, feel free to point people to this issue or link to places where discussion is happening, so that it can be considered
Hi, I have had discussions with several trans and non-binary competitors and some like this some do not. Some prefer to use the "Other" category as a way to not have any gender listed. One concern is that it can bring immediate attention to someone being listed as "Other" when they would just prefer to not have anything immediately indicative.
Another concern is people would change this maliciously to be on the top of a list of some kind. This is somewhat mitigated by the fact you have to request a delegate to change it, and, as a delegate, I'd never question it.
Through this discussion, it seems another option is to change "Other" to a "Do not list" option, and to add a new "Other" where they could. I don't think it's fair to automatically assume current "Other" competitors want to be listed, which is why I suggest to default them to "Do not list."
For my personal opinion, I do not think the WCA should track gender at all, but that is not a popular one. It is not information relevant to speedcubing.
