Improve sign up process for new users

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. From Mayis Jraghatspanyan on via the WCA forum (indented):

Competitors for my competition were mostly kids aged 7-14 and they didn’t know how to register. So their parents were registering for them (with their e-mails because kids didn’t have one). First, they created an account, then confirmed it via e-mail. Parents thought that they had already registered but in fact, they didn’t, they had only created an account. Later they emailed me and said that they didn’t receive a confirmation letter. So ended up guiding all the way through the registration process.

Describe the solution you'd like

Maybe new accounts can be redirected to the initial competition page they were at?

As an additional step point and from an implementation POV, I think that when users are not signed in, and press on "Create a WCA account here if you don't have one." (from the registration requirements) that you could send along some information of which competition page the account was created from (I'm not too familiar with website development, but on other sites, you can often see in the URL the page you were directed from).

I also think it would be valuable to have and explanation that the account should be set up in the name of the competitor. In Australia the vast majority of competitors are young kids and we get parents asking things on how they register their child using the account they set up, and questions about being able to register multiple kids with one "parent" account. If they're coming from a background of kids sports registrations it is not necessarily obvious that the WCA is set up from a competitor perspective.

I'd like to add a note on this, making the issue a bit broader. Redirect parameters should be present on every login. The absence of this makes the entire process a bit more cumbersome and potentially confusing for people who are not used to the platform.

For example, take this process:

  • Click on a WCA statistics database query URL
  • Login required
  • User logs in
  • Back to home screen. How do I get to the first screen again?

It is a bit counterintuitive. The same happens for any instance of login.

Thanks for the suggestion Guido, it's a really good one. I've made a new issue for it (mentioned above), as I believe it is independent of this change/redesign.
