Islamic holidays list

Open aliok opened this issue 8 years ago • 4 comments

Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. A year is 354 days. That means for example one of the major holidays, end of Ramadan, is on 6th of July this year and next year it is on ~25th of June.

The table structure in the page won't make sense as the dates change every year.

One suggestion would be having the major holidays in the list for next N (e.g. 3) years.

Just wanted to mention this. I saw someone tweeting about the list and wanted to help. Let me know if it you would like that. I can send a PR.

Hey @aliok thanks for commenting. The Hebrew calendar is also lunar but it has leap months built in to keep holidays in the "right" season. So, for example Rosh Hashanah, always comes in the fall - could be September or it could be the end of October. Do you have something similar in Islam?

I was thinking of starting a Google calendar with all the major holidays listed here out through at least 5 years. Some times conferences book their dates and venues 5 years in advance. What do you think of that idea.

Thanks Steve

Hi @thesteve0

Unfortunately such a solution doesn't exist for Islamic holidays. Some important event's like the one mentioned by @aliok is not even in the same day in all Islamic countries. It completely depends on whether the Moon is visible in a specific country or not. If they saw the Moon at the night before that date, the day after would be the 1st of the next month and is Eid Al Fitr, else the day after that would be.

Google already has official calendars for Jwish, Muslims, Christian and Orthodox holidays and also has dedicated calendars for holidays in each country. I think you may just needed to have another calendar that could be a union of these Google calendars.

Regards Ehsan

Ok - sorry I didn't respond sooner I am not seeing these notifications. Anyway, I am not sure what to do with that. Could we at least put the names in the list so organizers could be on the lookout?

@moghaddam and @aliok could you at least put in all those holydays in the list even if you can't fix the date - maybe just give the season or no date at least people would know to look.
