Cannot enter dream world (spirit world) after 0.8.8!?

I cannot enter the dreamworld. Every time I try I either enter a nightmare or are returned to the overworld immediately. It's like the dream world/non nightmare version is locked, currupt or something. I'm using the dreamweaver, wispy cotton etc to improve chances. Might have started after 0.8.7 or 0.8.8. It did work before that.
