3 Tb WD MyBook Essential is waiting for decryption
Hello dear Thomas, hello victims of the WD hardware encryption! I wish you all a happy new year 2019! Unfortunately, I am now one of the victims of WD hardware encryption technology and can not access my data. The PCB with the Symwave SW6316 chip of my 3Tb MyBook Essential hard drive was probably killed by a voltage peak. I did not immediately realize that the hard drive was encrypted because it had been in use for almost 10 years. The hard drive was formatted with HFSX or HFS + and had only one partition. I tried to connect the hard drive without housing to the iMAC and to initialize it - of course without success. I also tried the HDD after yours, Thomas, method to integrate, but unfortunately still without success. The decryption seems to work after sudo file -sL / dev / mapper / wd returns the system: DOS / MBR boot sector MS-MBR XP english at offset 0x12c "Invalid partition table" at offset 0x144 "Error loading operating system" at offset 0x163 "Missing operating system", disk signature 0x2dcc8; partition 1: ID = 0xaf, start CHS (0x3ff, 254,63), end CHS (0x3ff, 254,63), startsector 256, 732558080 sectors but after mounten the directory / mnt / wd is empty. When I use the Mounting with a loop device method - I see a new MyBook drive in the file manager, but the following error appears when I access it: Error mounting / dev / loop0 at / media / papa / MyBook: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on / dev / loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. I ask for help now and hope we will be able to access my data. I enclose the log of the last rescue attempt in the system. Yours sincerely, Andreas
You need to specify the filesystem type by adding "-t hfsplus" (without the quotes) to the mount command. The instructions were written for poor Windows users.
Oh, I now see that you already tried that.
Linux is a bit strange when it comes to mounting Mac filesystems. Try sudo mount -t hfsplus /dev/mapper/wd /mnt/wd without the "1".
Another thing that might cause a problem is if the ability to read Mac partition tables is not compiled into your kernel or loaded as a module. I don't remember what the module is called, sorry.
Another option is to clone the decrypted disk with ddrescue and plug the new disk into a Mac.
Hello everyone, i had a a failure in my WD My Book 3T drive, now the light is blinking and cannot be read by my MacBook pro, i tried other computers and same problem, no smart status detected, no detection on disk utility, i can hear it spinning, i tried swapping without success a PCB from a identical WD 3T i have, the number from the PCB controller is "4061-705094-001 REV AG" the one i tried is almost identical except for the termination 'Rev. AH", does this make a diference?, i have heard others had succed by doing this due the encryption but dont know if this Rev Ag and AH termination affects. what can i do, have tons of important info and an urge to use some files in it.
Instructions are in the PDF in this project.
