Where has route history gone?

Open l33cuj3s opened this issue 2 months ago • 5 comments

I am sure in the past each route node on theCrag displayed a full edit history — a chronological stream of all changes made (edits to name, grade, description, metadata, etc.) along with the user who performed each change. This functionality appears to have been removed from the UI.

One example to demonstrate: A route I put up has its grade changed. I limit the Activity Stream on the node to "updates". I then have to click Load More about 20 times to go back through 15 years of updates. Nowhere in these updates displays the grade change. I understand the "Load More" UI was implemented in a time where theCrag was suffering terribly with performance issues. Perhaps this needs to be reconsidered now?

Problem

Without easy access to the complete change history, it’s no longer possible to:

  • Verify when and why specific edits were made
  • Identify who made particular changes
  • Understand how a route entry has evolved over time
  • Resolve inconsistencies, disputes, or accidental edits
  • Support community moderation and data quality

This reduces transparency and makes it harder for contributors to maintain accurate route information.

Request

Please restore easy access to the full route history stream for each route node, including:

  • Timestamped list of all edits
  • The user responsible for each change
  • What was changed (as previously displayed)
  • Not making the user endlessly click 'load more'. Give the option to load the full history.

Rationale

theCrag’s strength comes from crowd-sourced contributions. Transparent edit histories help ensure data quality, encourage accountability, and make community moderation far more effective. This feature was extremely useful and widely relied upon by active contributors.

Thanks for your consideration.

@l33cuj3s what specific route can we look at as an example? I am seeing this on other routes eg:

Hey Brendan

Two issues here.

  1. History UI Allow me to see a fully hydrated route history without having to click 'load more' innumerable times.

  2. Actual missing data

  • Route: https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/australia/glasshouse-mountains/tibrogargan/route/13449817
  • Entered into theCrag by me as 30
  • At some point in time, assigned grade was changed to 29
  • Nowhere in the 13 year history stream can we see when, or by whom.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Lee

I fully support this request. Currently it's real pain to find out what happend on a route (or a crag, etc.)

Hmm weird, there is a raw feed of all activity here but it doesn't show the grade change specifically:

https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/australia/glasshouse-mountains/tibrogargan/route/13449817/activity

eg this one does:

https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/australia/gara-gorge/upper-gara-gorge/area/12650377938/activity

I think it only shows up as a grade change like this 'Brendan Heywood updated a grade for Ballet and Biceps 3 days ago' if the only thing was changed was the grade, so in this case a bunch of stuff was changed so it was likely Troy 2 years ago

Thanks Brendan, I've looked at those examples.

I guess both my points still stand.

Perhaps the activity link you supplied (btw I have never seen this before and as you know I am a long time user) might (with tweaks) go some way to addressing the "show full route history" request. But it needs to have everything. Complete change history.
