The Torment Nexus: The future of Security brigging and prisoner rehabilitation! FEAT. Baton Skin Crates

Open Iamgoofball opened this issue 1 year ago • 211 comments

About The Pull Request

Adds the Torment Nexus to the game. Adds support for bitrunner pods and servers and consoles to be on a separate network from the main Cargo Bitrunning room. Great for admins who want to make new Bitrunner rooms without interrupting existing runners! Adds support for domains only showing up on servers with the same network, so as to ensure separation of normal Bitrunning and the new Torment Nexus domains. Adds a new type of Bitrunning domain, Janitorial Work. Clean up areas to receive your reward! Adds a new type of Bitrunning domain, After-Hours Pizzaria Guarding. Watch the cameras and don't run out of power to receive your reward! Adds a new type of Bitrunning domain, Target Identification. Get a high score to receive your reward! Adds a new type of Bitrunning domain, Teleporter Maze Mapping. Find the end of the maze to receive your reward! Adds a new type of Bitrunning domain, Tourist Assistance. Help the tourist get to their destination to receive your reward! Decals now respect pixel shifting from the map editor.

Adds Baton Skins to the game, received via completing Torment Nexus domains and opening the resulting crates using a Baton Key purchased at the Cargo Goodies system for 249 credits. Features a variety of very cool and unique baton models and skins. Will you unbox the rarest baton of all time?

Why It's Good For The Game

This adds additional brigging opportunities for alternatives to the 2x2 AFK box in the form of fun minigames for prisoners to participate in while still providing materials ala if they were gulagged. Players love the concept and it provides an additional measure for crewmember rehabilitation to leverage. Fun for the whole family! Mappers can also flesh out the feature adding more and more options for Security and/or prisoners to participate in to rehabilitate themselves into model crewmembers!

This method of brigging allows crewmembers to learn valuable skills in being productive on the station, such as janitorial work, so that when they emerge from the system they're trained for an occupation other than greytiding!

Just look at these happy campers!

would you be able to lock people in this?

deathrobotpunch avatar Aug 28 '24 05:08 deathrobotpunch

No, if it runs out of power everyone is ejected immediately by force.

Iamgoofball avatar Aug 28 '24 05:08 Iamgoofball

No, if it runs out of power everyone is ejected immediately by force.

I meant lock people in so they are forced to endure their torment silly

deathrobotpunch avatar Aug 28 '24 06:08 deathrobotpunch

If I recall the "Leave the simulation" popup disappears after a few seconds, if the prisoner misses their chance are they just stuck until someone lets them out?

Dirt-Dweller avatar Aug 28 '24 07:08 Dirt-Dweller

i still doubt people would want to do this stuff instead of pulling up youtube or whatever else

mc-oofert avatar Aug 28 '24 07:08 mc-oofert

Gulag but worse and with no tangible benefit for the station's crew. If you want people to do janitorial work when they get arrested, do that as a security officier, like in game ? It's a gimmicky machine that ultimatly will see very little use.

Pinkufeck avatar Aug 28 '24 08:08 Pinkufeck

no tangible benefits

It gives mats same as bitrunning

Iamgoofball avatar Aug 28 '24 08:08 Iamgoofball

Can't you add the option to take control (or rather get forced into) an (immortal) cleanbot on the station with similar objectives for regular prisoners instead, or anything among those lines? 'Cause what they need is a way to interact with the rest of the rest of the station and be tangibly useful (when you have bitrunners and miners too, harvesting mats is not that tangible, goof). Most that's being offered to them right now seems to just want to keep them shut in a box of unexistence and irrelevance to the round.

On a personal level I'm fine with the torment of completing seemingly meaningless tasks over and over in an isolated virtual space, it's the stuff from dystopian/psych-horror sci-fi after all, but I think it is best reserved as a form of capital punishment (with a glimmer of hope of escaping the Matrix), because you're good as dead anyway.

TL;DR: Chaddest way to round-remove antags and deny them ghost roles. Truly a seccie's wet dream.

EDIT: See my next post because I had a brain fart and thought this prevented ghosting inside the VR but it only prevents death.

You can always kill yourself in the sim to get out at the cost of some brain damage. What you do next depends on how you map the room itself.

But like the issues with punishments is that they're all non interactive, it doesn't really matter if it's you in a cell, in gulag alone or in this thing. It could be the damn genetics minigame for all it matters. No actually cells are better because without the pressure of mechanics you can yell at sec and complain to lawyers.

SomeoneYouProbablyKnow avatar Aug 28 '24 12:08 SomeoneYouProbablyKnow

A few issues:

  • No way to break out on your own
  • Limited in ways someone else can break you out
  • Completely disregards any preparation for escape the prisoner could possibly do. IE.: Storage implants, uplink implants
  • It needs some kind of scale of punishment, so policy can make space law for it IE.: Timer, gulag points.
  • would require mapping work (blegh)

I suggest making this an opt-in in the gulag area, which would solve all the issues I listed.

awww this would be sick for roundstart prisoners though

deathrobotpunch avatar Aug 28 '24 12:08 deathrobotpunch

Yea as a thing in permabrig it's kinda neat. Frankly move all bitrunner jobslots to permabrig they won't even notice.

The lawyers in question never mattering to security, ever, unless you're on an MRP (rare as hell anyway) or an HRP server (much more likely to matter) And yelling on comms isn't gonna help you much and if anything it's gonna get sec on your ass even more, since players who resort to yelling on comms about security do so to spew shit about security. Up to slurs in some rare circumstances. There's no pressure from roleplay here at all.

And no matter what, regular cell, gulag, permabrig, this thing, you'll need someone else outside of security (a partner in crimes) to help you out, or some extremely good luck.

SimplySmiley123 avatar Aug 28 '24 13:08 SimplySmiley123

Oh yea our punishment methods all suck, cells suck marginally less because you don't have to do a fetch quest for it. Gen pop is the one alright punishment method because you get to interact with other people. When sec remembers how to use gen pop anyway (never)

SomeoneYouProbablyKnow avatar Aug 28 '24 13:08 SomeoneYouProbablyKnow

But how will I make shitters ghost out by giving them a one-point gulag sentence after this?

GPeckman avatar Aug 28 '24 13:08 GPeckman

giving perma prisoner something to do would legitimately be peak, especially if it helps them learn the game and contribute back to the round ngl great idea and I hope we get more of these things that are new players friendly

projectkepler-ru avatar Aug 28 '24 14:08 projectkepler-ru

I think you're kinda cooking with this, but there need to be ways to get out of it that don't necessarily rely on other players, or we're just going to run into people suiciding the moment they get it as a punishment like they do with the gulag.

I'll definitely map a few rooms for it, though. I can see this having life as a permabrig thing.

TheVekter avatar Aug 28 '24 16:08 TheVekter

I am very excited to see this developed further. What if you bitran so hard you escaped through another bitrunning console?

Zargoar avatar Aug 28 '24 17:08 Zargoar

what if they had to sort cargo forms into the correct folders depending on the stamp

Loafin34 avatar Aug 28 '24 19:08 Loafin34

Okay am i going crazy? Am i illiterate? Why is every sevond commend bothered by the fact the lack of escape options. Someone set the record strait. I'm under the impression is that if you somehow die in the sim you are booted out of the pod with some brain damage. And hoe is THAT harder than a cell, just kill yourself and it's equally escapable as any other method

They already do so even with regular timed sentences. Or just ghost. Same kind of players can't wait 3-4 minutes after doing some fucked up stuff.

I think it's more about the location of these. If it were it's own separate locked down room there would be no options.

If it were in permabrig it would effectively be just like permabrig solutions.

SimplySmiley123 avatar Aug 28 '24 20:08 SimplySmiley123

A little update on my previous comment for the sake of honesty because I was under the wrong impression this was supposed to cater the prisoner role foremost. I didn't take in consideration that this could be used to as a punishment alternative to gulagging or a timed sentence where you just wait, and I'm honestly at peace with that concept. I'm also an idiot and thought this prevented ghosting while it only prevents exiting the domain by death.

Ghommie avatar Aug 28 '24 20:08 Ghommie

i imagine for spess law you have to clean 4 code rooms before you can leave

Loafin34 avatar Aug 28 '24 21:08 Loafin34

The changes in this PR to avatar_connection.dm add functionality for pods to be "trapped" which makes it so that dying in the sim does not eject the avatar.

Could we use this to introduce behavior where dying in the domain results in dying outside of it?

TheVekter avatar Aug 29 '24 00:08 TheVekter

that doesn't make sense, though.

Loafin34 avatar Aug 29 '24 02:08 Loafin34

seems out of scope for this PR but could be an emag thing maybe? instantly killing a bitrunner out of nowhere for doing a thing that's supposed to have minor consequences would be pretty brutal. to have even the slightest hint of fairness you would probably want to notify the runner when they jack in "You suddenly are struck by a horrifying truth: If you die in cyberspace, You Die In Real Life! and then somehow block just leaving through the ladders.

I did not say that idea was for this PR, I was asking for my own purposes.

the machine needs a more corporate friendly name
