Textile Concepts Alignment

Open asutula opened this issue 4 years ago • 2 comments

We talked about updating the UI to be more in line with the general concepts of Textile. This could go a lot of different directions, so let's discuss what this really means and then create some issues inside this epic to tackle it.

My initial thoughts based on what we were typing about last week:

  • Focus less on photo sharing (although sharing photos through the camera roll connector is a thing)
  • Emphasize the idea of Textile "connectors"
    • Update drawer menu to list connectors
    • We should create some new awesome connectors (location maybe? shopping list?)
  • What else?

Or what are other's general thoughts about this?

Had a quick convo with @carsonfarmer and @undercase to get some current thinking on this. Main takeaways were:

There are two paths we could go down; Stick with the photo sharing app UX or head towards a more messaging-centric UX:

The photo sharing UX has the benefit of being focused. Sander and/or Andrew had received some user feedback that this is desireable. To me, this implies that the single goal is to create an app who's success is measured by being a succesful photo sharing app on the app store. If we want to acheive that, our Instagram-ish approach should be reconsidered and we should try to find some feature to win users over that other photo sharing apps don't provide.

The messaging-centric UX has the benefit of, while being less focused, being a platform for all things Textile. Success can be measured by traditional app store metrics, but also by providing a proving ground and demo showcase of the types of things possible with Textile.

@undercase provided the good feedback that, no matter which path we choose, we need to have the resources to keep new app features visually interesting and beautiful. Lots of the assets we've worked with in the past aren't applicable to new ideas and features we're working on now. It would be great to be able to create new assets.

I'm just a single voice of the userbase but would HIGHLY recommend sticking to a photos sharing experience for the textile photos ios/android app. My goal is to replace Insta/Face with this app for my friends and family. It should literally replicate some of those capabilities. That said, a messaging centric app would also be awesome, could easily be a different app, one that focuses on that with related concepts around text first as opposed to photo first - both have value in being separate and showcase different things about the framework/platform Textile is building!
