Investigate what could block avatar success

Describe the bug Recently, a user reported that the Android mobile app "freezes every time at the avatar setting. No matter what picture I choose it just freezes there." After some additional efforts on the part of the user, "suddenly it worked." One of their choices that had failed 2 x before, started working. It isn't clear from a cursory glace what might be causing this.
