I have this problem too. I only want to download chat history for the past week. Isn't it possible to go in reverse at least? Because I only care about recent messages.

Actually, the requires API was added some time ago, but I still didn't find time to implement the feature based on it.

I forwarded the messages I wanted to download to a temporary group and downloaded the group.

I too have encountered this and would love to see it improved upon. In my case I wanted to download the last few days of a chat that has a number of years worth of history and the export takes a painfully long time for what in the end is a very small amount of data.
