Understanding use of _ = AVariable

Thanks for this great repo, I've learned a lot!

I've noticed that at the end of your benchmarks you assign the accumulator variable to '_' before stoping the timer. I've never seen that before and I'm wondering what is it for. I imagine is something related with waiting for the variable to be updated but I'd like to know more about that behaviour.
